73

73 is the flip side of the perfect number, 37, and has some of the same symbolic meanings of 37.  It too is a prime number, as it can only be divided by one and itself and when the digits are added together, you get 10 or 1, the beginning and the end.  In this page, I am going to briefly discuss herbs and other plants, and some of their uses and their symbolism.  If you appreciate my efforts, you can support me by clicking on Buy Me a Coffee and leaving me a tip. Thank you.

Some of the sources that I use for my information are:

When the Oak King wanes
The Holly King reigns

Picture
According to Celtic mythology, The Oak King and the Holly King are in an eternal struggle for supremacy.  At around the winter solstice, the Oak King wins the upper hand and reigns as the days lengthen and life returns to the land.  Shortly after the summer solstice, the Holly King wins the upper hand and reigns as the days get shorter, moving the year into the dark times.  Thus, the holly is the tree on the Celtic calendar for July 8 through August 4, just as the Holly King is coming into full power.

As summer rolls on, the soil becomes dry, the springs new growth starts to harden off,and the fruit of the season ripens.  It seems as though all of nature is slowing down and getting ready for the hard times to come.  At this time, holly seems to thrive and get stronger.  Its evergreen leaves get brighter against the dulling background.  It is a symbol of the enduring nature of life and the eternal hope in the future.  It is a reminder that life remains even during the darkest times and when better times come, life will flourish abundantly again.

Holly is a symbol of eternal life.  It is a symbol of hope, for even during dark times, life endures and spring returns.  Just as its berries feed the birds and protects them from predators, it symbolizes protection and offers protection to the home when planted around it.  It symbolizes endurance and creativity when life gets challenging.  It was often hung in the home during yule season to protect the home, to bring good luck, and as a reminder that spring would return.

This was one of the chieftain trees of the ancient Druids.  It was connected to immortality and was one of the links between the physical and spiritual worlds.  Holly water was used to protect new born babies from harm.  It was believed to bring luck, protect the home from lightning, and guard against evil spirits.  It was used to attract prosperity and focus strength.  Wood of the holly was used to give a magical touch to fine woodworking.  Just a tidbit for the fans, Harry Potter's wand was made of holly.

Whether for magic, history, beauty, or discouraging visitors, this evergreen plant is worth having around.
