​Carnelian is a form of chalcedony with traces of iron oxide in the matrix.  This orange member of the quartz family is formed of fibrous layers of silicon dioxide.  This form of agate has a Mohs hardness of about 7 and is found in igneous deposits worldwide.  The highest quality carnelian is generally considered to come from India, Brazil, Egypt, and Uruguay.
